Chilly and changeable weekend

A chilly and at times wet weekend is on the way. Over the Welsh mountains and hills in the northern half of the UK it will be cold enough for snow. The changeable weather continues next week. On Tuesday there is a low chance of a period of rain turning to wet snow in parts of the south. Saturday starts with showers in large parts of the UK but it is drier in eastern and south eastern England. This morning outbreaks of rain push across southern counties and brighter conditions follow into the west. Elsewhere there will be showers but in the afternoon they become increasingly restricted to the north west. Over high ground in the north sleet or snow is likely. It will be windy.

Tonight periods of rain spread eastwards across much of England and Wales. Over high ground in northern and possibly central areas they turn to sleet or snow. Drier conditions return by the morning but further showers feed into the west. Scotland has wintry showers and a widespread frost.

Tomorrow begins dry in central and eastern Britain. In the west there will be showers. During the second half of the day wet weather pushes northeastwards over much of the UK, although it probably doesn't reach northern Scotland. Over high ground rain turns to snow. It will be quite cold.

Changeable again next week

Monday looks showery in the north. Elsewhere it should be dry and chilly, although it could turn wet near the south coast.

During Tuesday the north and west have a mix of sunny spells and wintry showers. In the south and south east outbreaks of rain may return and on their western and northern edges there is chance of them turning to sleet or snow. At the moment the risk is considered to be low.

Through the rest of the working week it is expected to stay chilly and changeable with showers or longer spells of rain. By the weekend milder air will probably be pushing northeastwards.
