Unsettled then colder

Thursday brings further outbreaks of rain to southern and central areas. The north has sunny spells and showers which turn wintry at times. Cold in the north.

During Friday and through the weekend it becomes cold in all of the UK. In the north showers increasingly fall as sleet or snow, even at low levels. On Saturday there is a chance of more persistent outbreaks of rain pushing eastwards across southern counties. On their northern edge they could turn to sleet or wet snow at times.

Cold conditions are forecast to continue early next week. There should be a good deal of bright weather but nighttime frosts become widespread and sharp.
