Unsettled then colder

Showers or longer spells of rain continue to be widespread on Wednesday, although some drier and brighter periods are likely too. It will be windy in the south and there is a risk of gales in coastal counties. Cooler than in recent days.

Thursday could bring further outbreaks of rain to southern and central areas. The north should have a mainly dry and bright day. Quite cold in the north.

During Friday and through the weekend it is expected to turn cold in all of the UK. In the north showers increasingly turn to sleet or snow, even at low levels. On Saturday there is a chance of more persistent outbreaks of rain pushing eastwards across southern counties. On their northern edge they could turn to sleet or wet snow at times.

Cold conditions are forecast to continue early next week. There should be a good deal of bright weather but nighttime frosts become widespread and sharp.
