Britain recorded its second hottest day yesterday with temperatures reaching 38.1C (100.58F) in Cambridge. It looks as though the August 2003 record of 38.5C (101F), set at Brogdale in Kent, will remain. However some data has not yet been analysed so there remains a chance it was beaten. Friday starts with thundery showers in parts of the south and east. Through the day they spread northwards with their main focus on central areas. The far east of England probably remains mainly dry with very warm sunny periods. To the west there will be a mix of sunny spells and showers.
Temperatures range from 21C (70F) in the west to 30C (86F) in East Anglia. Eastern Scotland is also likely see some of the warmest weather. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Tonight rain affects much of Britain and there will be some heavy bursts. Wales and south western England, as well as Northern Ireland, should remain mostly drier.

Autumn 2019 prospects
Tomorrow the main band of rain straddles much of Scotland and north eastern England. There could also be some heavy showery rain in south eastern England. The far northeast, Wales and much of southern and central England should have a lot of dry weather. Temperatures continue to dip and will be close to the late July average.

Through Sunday the band of rain edges southwestwards and there is uncertainty about exactly where it will be positioned. At the moment it is expected to stretch from western Scotland down to south eastern England. The wet areas will be cool, but to the southwest and northeast warm sunny spells develop. Eastern Scotland could see temperatures of 27C (81F).
The first half of next week is now expected to bring changeable weather. All regions could see showers and there is a risk of more prolonged outbreaks of rain in southern and central counties on Monday. Temperatures stay close to the seasonal average.
