[Updated 07:00 24/07/2019]

Fine weather

Cooler weather will return by the weekend but before then the heat continues building over southern and central regions. Tomorrow a new July high temperature is likely to be set. Wednesday starts with thunderstorms in the north east. They clear this morning to leave most places dry with variable amounts of cloud. During the afternoon scattered showers bubble up in the north and west but elsewhere it remains dry. There could be more cloud in the mix than yesterday but many places have sunny periods.

Temperatures range from 20C (68F) in the north west to a hot 30C (86F) in the south east. See the rain radar for the latest view.

New temperature records?

Tomorrow is looking like a historic day with the July temperature record which stands at 36.7C (98F) expected to be beaten. The UK's highest temperature on record is 38.5C (101F) set on August 10th 2003 at Brogdale in Kent. Computer models are suggesting it could be under threat with 39C (102F) possibly being reached locally in the south or the Midlands. Based on this morning's data the chance is estimated to be 30% to 40%.

The heat will cover much of England with mid 30Cs over a wide area. Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales won't be as hot. By the afternoon the risk of thunderstorms in western Britain increases. Scattered showers could also breakout further east and if cloud cover becomes more extensive top temperatures may not be quite as high as currently expected.

Big change by the weekend

During Thursday night thunderstorms push northwards. Friday probably starts dry in much of the country but in the morning downpours are forecast to develop over central and eastern counties. They continue through the afternoon. In the west it should be mainly dry with sunny spells. The west has a cooler and fresher day but it remains humid in the east.

The weekend is looking mixed. There is a risk of heavy showers or longer spells of rain in all regions. Temperatures will be much lower than recently, especially in the wet areas. The wettest weather may be in the north and east of Britain with the driest and sunniest conditions in the south west.

Early next week could become mainly dry and very warm in southern and central regions. The north and west remain more changeable.
