[Updated 07:15 23/07/2019]

Lightning strikes

The heat continues to build during the next couple of days. There will be a lot of fine weather but thunderstorms spread northeastwards across much of the UK tonight. The highest temperatures are likely to be on Thursday and the UK July temperature of 36.7C (98F) record may well be broken. The all time record set in August 2003 could also be under threat....READ IN FULL

Autumn 2019 prospects

Tomorrow morning the thundery rain in northern and eastern counties clears away. Sunny spells develop and it becomes very hot in central and eastern areas. The north and west remain a little cooler and there could be scattered showers in the afternoon.

Historic heat possible on Thursday

Thursday is expected to bring peak heat. The likelihood of a new July record which currently stands at 36.7C (98F) is high. The UK's all time temperature record of 38.5C (101F) set on August 10th 2003 at Brogdale in Kent may even be challenged.

Low pressure to the west of the UK will be pumping up exceptionally warm upper level air from the south. Even at 1500m above sea level temperatures will be close to 23C or 24C over central and eastern England. Computer models show temperatures at the ground level peaking at between 35C and 39C in the south east and possibly the Midlands. The north and west won't be as warm and during the afternoon thunderstorms breakout.

Overnight and through Friday thunderstorms clear eastwards. Sunny spells develop and it will be another very warm or even hot day. In central and eastern temperatures probably climb above 30C again.

The weekend is looking mixed. There is a risk of showers or longer spells of rain in all regions. Temperatures will be lower than recently but there should still be some warm spells of sunshine around.

Early next week could be mainly dry and very warm in southern and central regions. The north and west are expected to be more changeable.
