[Updated 08:10 21/07/2019]

Summer day

The next few days bring fine weather to much of the UK but it remains more changeable in the north west. Very warm air will be filtering northwards and temperatures are expected to peak at above 30C (86F). The hottest day of the year may be recorded but by next weekend cooler conditions are likely to return....READ IN FULL

Sunday starts with a few light showers in the north west and south west of Britain. Elsewhere it is dry with variable amounts of cloud. Through the day outbreaks of rain push across Northern Ireland and into western Scotland. Cloud builds in other parts of northern and western Britain too, possibly leading to a few spots of rain. Central and eastern counties stay dry with the best of the sunshine in the south east.

Temperatures range from 16C (61F) in the north west to 25C (77F) in the south. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Hottest day of the year?

On Tuesday the warmth spread northwards. Temperatures could reach 34C (93F) in the south and 27C (81F) in eastern Scotland. The far north west of the UK may be cloudier with patchy rain but elsewhere it will be dry and sunny.

Wednesday could see wet weather pushing eastwards across the northern half of the UK. There is also a chance of showery rain in the south for a time. Despite that hot sunny spells are expected and temperatures probably exceed 30C (86F) again in parts of England.

During the second half of the week a breakdown is likely to take place as cooler air begins returning southeastwards. The risk of thunderstorms is uncertain. Some computer model runs are showing the heat not being pushed away from eastern England until the weekend, so forecast details are subject to change.

At the moment it looks as though heavy and thundery rain will spread northeastwards across much of the country on Thursday. Central and eastern England could remain hot and sunny with temperatures possibly climbing to the mid 30Cs.

Through Friday and the early part of the weekend cooler conditions move southeastwards across all regions.
