Summer day

Showery rain affects much of the UK today and it will be quite cool. Tomorrow drier and warmer weather returns as high pressure builds from the south. Early next week temperatures rise and Wednesday could turn out to be the hottest day of the year so far. Thereafter a breakdown to cooler and showery conditions is expected....READ IN FULL

Saturday starts with showery rain in parts of the UK. The heaviest bursts are in northern England and eastern Scotland. This morning it should turn drier in the west and to the south of London, leaving a mainly dry afternoon. In central and eastern England, as well as eastern Scotland, the risk of heavy showers continues. Sunny intervals are more likely later in the day.

Temperatures range from 16C (61F) in the north west to 21C (70F) in the south. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Hot early next week

Monday will be fine and very warm in much of the UK. Scotland remains cloudier with outbreaks of rain mainly in the north and west.

On Tuesday the warmth spread northwards. Temperatures could reach 33C (91F) in the south and 27C (81F) in eastern Scotland. Isolated thundery showers may breakout but most places have a fine and sunny day.

During the middle part of the week cooler air begins returning southeastwards. The exact timing of the transition is not certain but most computer models show it taking place between Wednesday and Friday. The extent of the rain and thunderstorm risk during the breakdown is also speculative at this range.

At the moment it looks as though southern and central Britain will be hot and sunny on Wednesday. Temperatures in the south could possibly reach 35C (91F). The risk of cloud and rain is higher in the north.

The heat may hold on in the south east during Thursday. However, the likelihood is that it will be turning cooler and there is a risk of thunderstorms. The north and west have more changeable weather.
