Heavy rain moving northeastwards

[Updated 08:14 08/05/2019]

Overcast sky

An area of low pressure and its associated frontal systems will keep things unsettled for the next few days. By the weekend a change starts to take place as high pressure builds in from the west. Wednesday starts wet in much of the UK but parts of the north west and south west are drier. The heaviest rain is in a band across central areas and through the day it pushes northeastwards. Brighter conditions return to southern counties but heavy and thundery showers break out. Northern Scotland has more showery conditions and it remains cold enough for sleet or snow, especially over high ground. It will be quite windy.

Temperatures range from 7C (45F) in Scotland to 16C (61F) in brighter parts of the south. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Tonight it gradually becomes drier. By the end of the night persistent outbreaks of rain probably become restricted to Northern Ireland. Also showers could continue in central England and Wales.

High pressure next week

The mixed theme continues on Friday. There will be further showers but southern areas could have a good deal of dry weather. Temperatures remains disappointing for the time of year.

By the start of the weekend a chilly northerly air stream returns as low pressure pulls away eastwards. On Saturday showers remain quite widespread and a cold night follows. By Sunday high pressure builds in from the west so it becomes drier. Patchy frost is possible early in the day but in the afternoon sunshine it should feel pleasant.

By early next week high pressure becomes the dominant feature of the weather. It is expected to lead to warmer and settled period. Initially some of the highest temperatures could be in Scotland but by mid-week values of 21C (70F) could be reached widely.
