Bank holiday weekend chill

[Updated 07:00 04/05/2019]

Frosty weather

Arctic air has moved southwards during the last 24 hours and it will lead to a chilly Bank Holiday weekend. Showers become widespread today and in the north they could be wintry. Under clearing skies tonight a widespread frost is expected. The next couple of days should be mostly dry in the south but showery rain is more likely in the north.  Next week it turns unsettled....READ IN FULL

Saturday starts with patchy outbreaks of rain in the south west and there are showers near the east coast. Elsewhere it is fine and cold with a touch of frost in places. This morning it turns drier in the south west but showers become more widespread in the east. During the afternoon the showers become heavy and they feed into central regions. Hail could be mixed in and in the north snow is possible, especially over high ground. Wales, Northern Ireland and much of western Britain remain mainly dry.

It will be cold. Temperatures range from 7C (45F) in Scotland to 12C (54F) in the south west. In the east a keen wind adds to the chill. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Summer 2019 weather [NEW]

Tomorrow scattered showers bubble up over England and Wales. However many places miss them and have a fine day. Scotland has cloudier skies with spells of rain at times, mostly in the north. After a very cold start it remains chilly but temperatures climb a little higher in the southern half of the country than today.

Unsettled next week

Bank Holiday Monday looks mixed. Showery rain in the north probably extends into central areas and perhaps parts of the south too. The south west should stay dry. Temperatures generally remain on the low side for the time of year. In Scotland it will be cold and there could be snow over high ground.

Showery conditions continue into Tuesday but a change begins to take place as a deep area of low pressure approaches from the southwest. Temperatures in the south won't be too far off the average but in the north it remains cold. .

During the middle of the week areas of low pressure move in from the Atlantic and bring unsettled weather. Wet and windy periods are expected in the southern half of the UK but it possibly stays more showery in the north. By the weekend high pressure may start to quieten things down in the south.
