Chilly bank holiday weekend beckons

[Updated 07:15 03/05/2019]

Bluebells

Arctic air pushes southwards today and that sets the theme for a chilly Bank Holiday weekend. Frosts are likely to be widespread and in the north it will be cold enough for showers to turn wintry. There could even be a few flakes of snow mixed in further south. Next week it is expected to turn very unsettled....READ IN FULL

Friday starts with a band of showery rain stretched across northern England. It marks the border between cold and mild air masses. This afternoon it reaches southern counties and there will be some heavy bursts mixed in. Brighter conditions follow but showers develop and in the north they turn wintry.

Temperatures range from 7C (45F) in Scotland to 16C (61F) in the south. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Summer 2019 weather [NEW]

Tomorrow morning showers become more widespread over eastern Britain and by the afternoon they extend into central areas. Some will be heavy and in the north they could fall as snow at times, especially over higher ground. The west should be mostly dry.

It will be cold for the time of year with temperatures struggling into double figures in the south. A widespread frost returns overnight and even in the south temperatures probably dip below 0C (32F) in hollows and valleys. In the Scottish Glens lows of around -6C (21F) are possible.

Wet and windy period

Sunday brings a lot of dry weather with fewer showers. However outbreaks of rain may push into Scotland later on. After a very cold start it remains chilly but temperatures should be a little higher in much of England and Wales than on Saturday.

Bank Holiday Monday looks mixed. Showery rain in the north may spread into central regions. The south probably stays mainly dry. Temperatures in the south recover a little. The north has another cold day and in Scotland the risk of snow continues over high ground.

By Tuesday a change begins to take place as a deep area of low pressure approaches from the southwest. The north keeps the showery conditions but in the south winds strengthen and outbreaks of rain are likely to develop.

During the middle of the week the southern half of the UK has wet and windy periods. Scotland may be brighter and showery for much of the time. Late in the week it may begin to turn drier.
