Snow scene

May starts on a quiet note but a dramatic change is on the way. During Friday Arctic air sweeps southwards and it becomes a lot colder. Wednesday begins wet in parts of northern and western Britain. Elsewhere it is dry. Through the day outbreaks of rain move eastwards but they become showery. Despite that some heavy bursts remain mixed in. East Anglia and the south east probably remain fine.

Temperatures range from 13C (55F) in wet areas to around 19C (66F) in the south east. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Late season arctic blast

During Friday a dramatic change takes place. A band of showery rain moves southwards and much colder arctic air follows on behind it. In the north showers turn wintry. A widespread frost sets in overnight and temperatures plunge below 0C (32F) in much of the country.

On Saturday central and eastern Britain have showers. In the north they could fall as snow at times, especially over higher ground. The west should be mostly dry. It will be very cold for the time of year and a widespread frost returns overnight.

The rest of the Bank Holiday weekend looks mixed. The days brings showers and sunny spells with the best of the weather probably in the west. Temperatures recover a little but they remain below the average. Nighttime frost continue in areas where clear periods form.

Next week it becomes milder. However the risk of rain increases too.
