Heavy showers in the south

[Updated 07:15 08/04/2019]

Umbrella

Showery conditions continue in southern and possibly central counties during the next couple of days. In places there could be some quite large rainfall totals. Further north it stays mainly dry. During the middle part of the week colder air filters down from the northeast but it may struggle to reach Northern Ireland and western Britain....READ IN FULL

Monday starts murky and damp in much of the country. This morning cloud begins to breaks and sunny spells develop. The best of them are likely to be in western Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England. In southern and central regions showers are triggered as temperatures rise. This afternoon they could become heavy, bringing hail and thunder.

Temperatures range from 10C (50F) in Scotland to 18C (64F) in brighter parts of central and eastern England. See the rain and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

Cold air returning next week

On Wednesday rain in southern counties gradually moves away southwards. Elsewhere it will be dry and bright.

During the second half of the week a blocking area of high pressure remains centred over Scandinavia. An easterly flow on its southern flank pulls colder air across much of the UK. However, in the west more of a southwesterly influence may keep it milder for much of the time.

Nighttime frosts are expected in areas where clear spells develop. A few wintry showers are possible in the north during the days, however it should be mainly dry. Through the weekend wetter weather may start returning to the south west. Elsewhere it probably stays settled and in the east it will be quite cold.
