Fair weather

March has been a mild month with the Central England Temperature (CET) to the 28th provisionally 2.3C above the 30 year average. Today it remains warm in the south but a change is taking place. Saturday starts with a band of rain over parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland. Through the day it pushes southwards into northern England but the rain becomes increasingly patchy. Ahead of it there will be warm sunny spells but a few showers could break out in the south east. Clearer and colder conditions follow on behind it.

Temperatures range from 7C (45F) in the far north to a warm 19C (66F) in the south east. See the rain and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

Colder and showery outlook

Monday is looking bright and chilly in England and Wales. After a bright start across Scotland and Northern Ireland it clouds over and persistent outbreaks of rain push in. Over the mountains snow is likely.

On Tuesday outbreaks of rain clear southeastwards. Colder conditions follow on and heavy showers develop. Hail and thunder is likely in places and in the north some of the showers turn to snow.

The cold conditions continue on Wednesday. Wintry showers are expected to be widespread and heavy. Over higher ground in central and northern regions there is the potential for moderate falls of snow. Even southern counties could see a few flakes of snow.

The rest of the week is looking changeable and chilly. All regions probably have showers or longer spells of rain at times. In the north the risk of snow remains.
