Unsettled and cooler outlook

[Updated  06:50 28/02/2019]

Umbrella

A change in the weather is now underway. During the next few days it becomes unsettled with all areas having wet and windy periods. Temperatures also trend downwards and in the north there is an increasing likelihood of snow over high ground. Next week it remains mixed....READ IN FULL

Thursday starts with rain in Wales and south western England. Elsewhere it is dry and locally in the east there has been a touch of frost. Through the day showery outbreaks of rain spread eastwards across much of southern and central Britain. They turn heavy at times but some places completely miss them and have bright conditions. The north should be dry but often cloudy.

It will be cooler than recently but still mild for the time of the year. Temperatures range from 9C (48F) in the north to 14C (57F) in the south. See the rain and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

Buzz

Tomorrow marks the start of the meteorological spring. During the morning it will be dry and bright. Through the afternoon cloud builds from the west and outbreaks of rain push into Northern Ireland. By the evening the wet weather reaches parts of western Britain and it is accompanied by strengthening winds.

Unsettled weekend on the way

On Saturday morning a band of rain clears eastwards to leave brighter conditions. However, wet and very windy weather quickly pushes into the west of the UK. Severe gales are possible in exposed parts of the north west. During the second half of the day heavy rain spreads eastwards across all of the country. In the north it will be quite chilly and over the Scottish mountains snow is possible. The south remains mildish.

Sunday is looking wet and windy in the south. Gales or even severe gales are possible in the south west. Outbreaks of rain may spread into central regions too. The north has sunny spells but there will be showers and over high ground they turn to snow at times. Temperatures stay close to average in the south but the north will be rather cold.

The unsettled theme continues next week. All regions have rain at times and it will be cold enough for snow over high ground in the north.
