Wet and windy in the north west

[Updated 07:05 19/02/2019]

Fair weather

Atlantic disturbances keep the weather in the north unsettled during the next couple of days. The south remains drier as high pressure centred over the continent begins to strengthen and exert its influence. It leads to a very mild southwesterly air stream and February temperature records may be under threat later this week....READ IN FULL

Tuesday starts with showers in the north and west. Elsewhere it is dry and chilly. This morning cloud builds in the west and through the afternoon outbreaks of rain move across Northern Ireland and into western Britain. It also becomes windy. Central and eastern areas remain dry and in the south sunny spells continue.

Temperatures range from 7C (45F) in the north to 9C (48F) in the south west. See the rain and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

Exceptionally mild late in the week

On Thursday there could be some patchy rain in the north west but it should be mostly dry. Sunny spells and very mild conditions make it feel springlike. Temperatures could reach an exceptional 17C (63F) in north eastern Scotland due to a foehn effect.

During the rest of the week a lot of fine weather is expected, although Atlantic disturbances may brush the north west and bring some rain at times. A south or southwesterly wind continues to feed unusually mild air in and temperatures will be well into the teens Celsius in much of the country.

The highest temperature recorded in the UK in February is 19.7C (67F). It was recorded in Greenwich, London, in 1998 and there is an outside chance of it being challenged on Friday.
