Milder and mixed outlook

[Updated 09:00 03/02/2019]

Daffs in bloom

The cold weather continues today but a change is on the way. Disturbances and milder air push in from the Atlantic during the next 24 hours and set the theme for the coming week. In the medium term there are indications of it turning very mild at times so an early taste of spring is possible. Despite that there is a chance of colder conditions returning later in February....READ IN FULL

Sunday starts with a widespread frost in the southern half of the UK. In places it was severe and Benson, Oxfordshire temperatures plunged to -10C (14F) last night. In the north it is less cold and there are outbreaks of rain and snow in places. Through the day wet weather in the north slowly pushes southeastwards reaching northern England and northern Wales this afternoon. Areas either side of it have a good deal of dry weather, but cloud builds in the south after a bright start.

Temperatures range from 3C (36F) to 6C (42F) in much of the country, but it will be milder in the south west. See the rain and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

Buzz

Tomorrow morning the rain slowly clears from the south east. Elsewhere there will be a good deal of bright weather, although in the north a few showers are likely. During the afternoon all areas should have sunny spells. Temperatures will be close to average in the north but the south has quite a mild day.

Changeable outlook

Through Tuesday another band of wet weather is expected to push in from Atlantic. Heavy outbreaks of rain develop, but eastern Britain could remain dry until late in the day. It will be milder and in the south and west temperatures could reach double figures.

The rest of the week brings changeable weather. Temperatures fluctuate between average and above average in much of the country. In Scotland it will be cold enough at times for snow over the hills.

In the longer term there are signs of high pressure building to the south of the UK. If that scenario happens it could lead to an early taste of spring.
