Friday starts with outbreaks of snow in southern and central regions, and wintry showers in northern England. There have been moderate accumulations of snow in parts of the south and travel disruption is expected today. Snow depths are very variable, even over short distances. For example, parts of west London barely have a covering but in the Chilterns over 5cm has accumulated.
This morning the snow becomes increasingly confined to areas around London and the south eastern corner. As the outbreaks become lighter and temperatures edge upwards, there is an increasing chance of them turning to rain or sleet. This afternoon the risk of showery rain, sleet and snow continues in the south east.
Western areas have a mainly dry day but in the north there will be further wintry showers. Many of them fall as snow and they give accumulations in places, although near the east coast rain is possible at times.
Most of the country has a very cold day with temperatures only a few degrees above freezing point at best. To the south east of London milder upper level air probably filters in for a time and temperatures may reach to 6C (42F). See the rain and precipitation type radar for the latest view.
Meteo France Arpege, rain - snow, 12:00 GMT Fri 1st February
Tonight wintry showers continue in the east and parts of the south. Cloudy skies probably stop temperatures falling much below 0C (32F). In the north and west clear spells lead to a sharp frost.

GFS, temperatures, 15:00 GMT Sat 2nd February
Sunday looks dry and cold in southern and central regions. In the north west outbreaks of rain develop and they turn to sleet or snow as they push eastwards.
Early next week a change is expected. A band of rain spreads eastwards and it could be preceded by sleet or snow in the north. During Tuesday and Wednesday it becomes milder and all areas see some rain.
The second half of the week probably brings more changeable weather with close to average temperatures. However, there is a low chance of a much colder easterly flow developing.
