Much of the country has had its coldest night of the winter so far with temperatures as low as -12C (10F). Despite the current wintry conditions the Central England Temperature (CET) for January is expected to finish above average. Today it's all eyes to the southwest as a weather front pushes in and brings the risk of disruptive snow to southern and possibly central areas....READ IN FULL
Thursday starts with a severe frost in much of the UK and there is freezing fog in places too. The fog gradually lifts and sunny spells develop in the north. In the south cloud builds and outbreaks of rain push into Cornwall and Devon. This afternoon the rain slowly pushes into Wales and other parts of the south west. It increasingly turns to sleet or snow and begins to accumulate.
Most of the country has a very cold day with temperatures only a few degrees above freezing point at best. See the rain and precipitation type radar for the latest view.
DWD ICON, rain - snow, 15:00 GMT Thu 31st January
Tonight outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow affect southern and central counties. Computer models are generally showing the heaviest outbreaks affecting Wales and parts of southern England. Falls of several cms are likely and locally 10cms could be exceeded.
As the precipitation pushes north and east it tends to become lighter and patchier. There is uncertainty about its northern limit with most computer models showing it fading in the Midlands, but some suggesting it could reach Yorkshire and Lancashire. There is also the possibility of it turning back to rain in parts of the south as milder air feeds in.
Meteo France Arpege, rain - snow, 00:00 GMT Fri 1st February
The north has another very cold night and again temperatures could plunge below -10C (14F). There's also the chance of frost developing in parts of the south later in the night as the precipitation clears away.

Saturday brings further wintry showers. Near the east coast there is a chance of longer periods of rain, sleet and snow. It remains very cold with frost early and late in the day.
Sunday looks dry and cold in southern and central regions. In the north west outbreaks of rain develop and they turn to sleet or snow as they push eastwards.
Early next week a change is expected. A band of rain spreads eastwards and it could be preceded by sleet or snow in the north. During Tuesday and Wednesday it probably becomes milder with a risk of further spells of rain.
