Tuesday starts mixed. It's dry and frosty in the east but wintry showers are affecting the north west. In the west there are outbreaks of rain and sleet. Through the day they spreads eastwards across England and Wales and turn to snow in places. They are followed by a mix of sunshine and wintry showers in the west. During the afternoon and evening the main band of precipitation is expected to be over central and south eastern England, and by then much of it may be falling as snow.
Forecast parameters are marginal for snow today. As a result computer models show a lot of variance about the risk of falling and accumulating snow. Disruptive accumulations of snow are likely in places, especially over higher ground where up to 10cms is not out of the question.
Temperatures range from 2C (36F) in Scotland to 7C (45F) in the south west. See the rain and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

ICON, temperatures, 15:00 GMT Wed 30th January
During Thursday and Friday an area of low pressure moves in from the Atlantic. Weather fronts associated with it push northeastwards bringing a mix of rain, sleet and snow. The extent of the snow risk remains uncertain but computer models are showing the potential for significant falls in southern and central counties.
By Saturday the low pressure system moves away eastwards into the continent. Cold air returns southwards across the UK and wintry showers develop. The cold conditions last through the weekend but it may turn drier as a ridge of high pressure builds in from the west.
