Cold with wintry showers

[Updated 07:10 22/01/2019]

Wintry scene

Cold weather continues during the next couple of days and there will be wintry showers. By Friday it turns milder but during the weekend a chilly northwesterly air stream returns. The same theme is expected next week. Although it won't be a big freeze there is a risk of snow, particularly in the north....READ IN FULL

Tuesday starts with wintry showers in the west and the north west but elsewhere it is dry. This morning sunny spells develop but wintry showers pepper western counties. During the afternoon they spread eastwards bringing a mix of rain, sleet and snow. Over high ground accumulations of snow are possible.

Temperatures range from 2C (36F) in the far north to 8C (46F) in the south west. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Mid week and beyond

Thursday starts with a frost in much of the country. During the day patchy outbreaks of rain and milder conditions push into the west. Central and eastern counties remain dry and cold.

Friday begins with a wedge of milder air over much of the country. After a dry start outbreaks of rain push southeastwards across the northern half of the UK and are followed by colder conditions. Temperatures could reach double figures in southern and central regions.

Wet weather clears southeastwards on Saturday morning to leave all of the UK under a cold northwesterly air stream. Wintry showers become heavy in the north and west where they could give accumulations of snow, especially over the hills.

Next week the rather cold and changeable weather continues. All regions have showers and longer spells of wet weather. Snow is possible at times with the greatest risk in the north and over high ground.
