Rain followed by colder conditions

[Updated 07:10 16/01/2019]

Wintry scene

Colder air pushes southwards during the next 24 hours. Wintry showers develop for a time, especially in coastal counties, before a ridge of high pressure pushes in from the west tomorrow. Wednesday is off to a wet start in northern and western parts of the UK. Through the day outbreaks of rain move southeastwards and they are followed in the north by colder and brighter conditions. Showers develop in northern areas this afternoon and become increasingly wintry, especially over higher ground. In the south the rain continues but through the evening it clears away.

Temperatures this afternoon vary from 4C (39F) in the far north to 11C (52F) in the south. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Buzz

Tomorrow will be cold in all regions. Eastern coastal counties have wintry showers and a few are possible in western and central areas. During the afternoon the showers become more scattered and retreat back to the east coast. Inland locations generally have a dry and bright day.

Changeable and often cold outlook

During Friday an area of low pressure pushes in from the west. It brings outbreaks of rain and in the north they may turn to snow and produce significant accumulations. There could also be some temporary snowfall in central areas, especially over high ground. The south has rain and in the south west it turns milder.

The weekend is looking rather cold. There will be scattered wintry showers but much of the country remains dry and bright. Quite a widespread frost is expected on Saturday night.

In the longer term it stays changeable and often chilly. There is a risk of snowfall, particularly in the north. Conditions will be more marginal in the south, but snow is not ruled out, especially over high ground.
