Mixed week but cold at times

[Updated 07:00 14/01/2019]

Overcast sky

The weather will be changeable in the coming days with temperatures fluctuating around the mid January average. During the middle of the week an area of low pressure sinking southeastwards brings the possibility of rain, sleet and snow to parts of the country. By the weekend colder and showery conditions return....READ IN FULL

Monday starts with a lot of dry weather but there are some wintry showers in the north. The rest of the day will be dry and bright in much of England and Wales, although in the east thicker cloud could lead to an odd shower. In Scotland and Northern Ireland cloud builds and patchy outbreaks of rain push in from the west.

Maximum temperatures range from 5C (41F) in the north east to 10C (50F) in the south west. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Buzz

Tomorrow outbreaks of rain continue in Scotland with the heaviest ones in the west and north. To the east of high ground it should be drier. There will be a lot of cloud in the rest of the country which could give some drizzle in the west. The best chance of sunny spells is in eastern and south eastern England. It will be mild.

Changeable and often cold outlook

During Wednesday a more organised band of rain clears southeastwards and colder conditions follow it. Showers develop and in the north they increasingly turn to snow, even at low levels. A strong wind makes it feel very cold in the north.

During Thursday and Friday there is quite a lot of uncertainty. Wet weather may push southeastwards and if that happens there is a risk of rain turning to snow, especially in the north where accumulations are possible even at low levels.

By the weekend rather cold and showery conditions probably return. Nighttime frosts become more widespread and the showers could turn wintry.

In the longer term it stays changeable and often chilly. There is a risk of snowfall, particularly in the north. Conditions will be more marginal in the south, but snow is not ruled out, especially over high ground.
