Snow scene

The weather during the coming will be mixed. All areas have outbreaks of rain at times but also brighter and showery periods when it turns colder. Sunday starts overcast in much of the country and there are showery outbreaks of rain around. Through the day a band of patchy rain moves southwards. Colder, brighter and showery conditions follow it into the north. This afternoon longer spells of rain affect northern and western Scotland, with snow likely over higher ground. In other areas it becomes mainly dry and brighter skies push down into central regions. It will be windy, particularly in the north.

Maximum temperatures range from 6C (41F) in northern Scotland to 13C (55F) in the south. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Changeable and often cold outlook

Mild conditions return on Tuesday. Outbreak of rain affect the north west but elsewhere it should be mostly dry and there could be some brighter spells. It will be windy.

During Wednesday a more organised band of rain clears southeastwards and colder conditions follow it. Showers develop and in the north they increasingly turn to snow, even at low levels. A strong wind makes it feel very cold in the north.

During Thursday and Friday there is quite a lot of uncertainty. Wet weather may push southeastwards and if that happens there is a risk of rain turning to snow, especially in the north where accumulations are possible even at low levels.

By the weekend rather cold and showery conditions probably return. Nighttime frosts become more widespread and the showers could turn wintry, especially in the north.

In the longer term it stays changeable and often cold. There is a growing risk of disruptive snowfall, particularly in the north. Conditions will be more marginal in the south, but snow is not ruled out, especially over high ground.
