[Updated 07:30 12/01/2019]

Overcast weather

Across the UK it will be mainly cloudy, mild and damp today. Tomorrow brings a repeat performance to much of the UK, but in Scotland it turns cold and showery. Next week changeable weather is expected. Colder spells develop, especially in the north where the risk of snow increases....READ IN FULL

Saturday is off to a murky start and there are patchy outbreaks of rain in the north. Through the day it stays mostly overcast. It will be drizzly at times and in the north west outbreaks of rain are likely. A few brighter spells are possible, with the best of them in the north east. It will be windy, particularly in the north.

Maximum temperatures range from 8C (46F) in the north east to 12C (54F) in the south west. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Tomorrow light outbreaks of rain move away southwards. In the north it turns brighter, colder and showery. The showers could become prolonged and over high ground they increasingly fall as snow.  Southern and central regions have another mild day. It will be windy.

Colder and changeable next week

Monday starts showery in Scotland but other areas should be dry. Later on thicker cloud spreads across the north and wet weather pushes into western Scotland and possibly Northern Ireland.

Tuesday will be mild and windy. There is a risk of rain in the north but the south should be drier and there could be some brighter spells.

During the middle of the week a band of rain clears southeastwards and colder conditions follow on behind it. Showers develop and in the north they increasingly turn to snow, even at low levels.

By Friday another band of rain moves southeastwards. It is followed by showers and in northern regions they turn increasingly wintry. Accumulations of snow are possible, even to quite low levels. By the weekend the colder air is expected to have moved down across all regions.

In the longer term it stays changeable and often cold. There is a growing risk of disruptive snowfall, particularly in the northern half of the country. Conditions will be more marginal in the south, but snow is not ruled out, especially over high ground.
