Colder and more mixed outlook

[Updated 07:15 10/01/2019]

Overcast weather

The weather remains fairly nondescript today and tomorrow but it will become milder again. This weekend a more changeable theme develops and it continues next week. From the middle of the month there are signs of a colder and more wintry period of weather, especially in the north where the risk of snow increases....READ IN FULL

Thursday starts with a frost in southern and central regions, but cloudier skies in the north are bringing patchy rain. During the rest of the day the band of damp weather gradually moves southwards. Areas to its north and south have dry conditions and a few bright spells.

Maximum temperatures range from a chilly 4C (39F) in the south east to a close to average 8C (46F) in Northern Ireland. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Buzz

Tomorrow light outbreaks of rain affect the north west of the UK. Elsewhere brighter interludes are possible, but a lot of cloud remains and at times it could be thick enough to produce drizzle. Temperatures in the east stay close to the seasonal average but the west will be quite mild.

More unsettled next week

The weekend looks mixed. During Saturday a band of rain spreads southeastwards but it becomes patchier before clearing away. North western areas also have outbreaks of rain and generally there is likely to be a lot of cloud cover. It will be windy but quite mild.

On Sunday another band of rain moves southeastwards and fragments. Brighter, colder and showery weather follows into the north. It will be windy, especially in the north where gales are expected.

Next week a more changeable spell develops. All regions see some rain, although the south probably continues to have a fair amount of dry weather. After a mild start temperatures trend downwards and later on the risk of snow in the north increases.
