Wet and windy in the north

[Updated 07:15 07/01/2019]

Windy weather

The new working week coincides with a change in the weather as colder air from the north follows a weakening band of rain southwards. By tomorrow a northerly air flow covers all of the UK and temperatures take a dip. Through the rest of the week high pressure builds back in from the west and milder air gradually returns....READ IN FULL

Monday is off to a wet and windy start in the northern half of the UK. Through the day the band of rain pushes southwards, but it becomes fragmented as it reaches Wales and central England this afternoon. Colder and showery conditions follow it into the north, however it remains very windy with gales and severe gales in the far north. Southern England stays dry and overcast for much of the day.

Temperatures this afternoon range from a cold 4C (39F) in Scotland to a mild 11C (52F) in the south. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Winter 2018/19 forecast [Issued 01/12/2018]

Buzz

Tomorrow most of the country has a dry day with bright spells but it will be colder. Some showers are likely in Scotland and eastern coastal counties. In the north and over high ground elsewhere they could be wintry with sleet or snow at times. A keen wind in the east makes it feel particularly cold.

High pressure builds back

On Wednesday high pressure begins to build back from the west. It gives a dry day to most of the country but near the east coast and potentially in the south east there are likely to be scattered some wintry showers. It will be cold and quite a widespread frost is likely to develop overnight.

The dry and rather cold weather continues in much of the country on Thursday. However in the north west it turns milder and outbreaks of rain are likely.

For the rest of the week high pressure probably remains close to the UK. Spells of wet weather are most likely in the north but occasionally they could spread southwards. Milder conditions in the west steadily spread eastwards and by the weekend daytime temperatures are likely to be in double figures.
