Friday starts with a widespread frost in the southern half of the UK but in the north temperatures are generally several degrees above freezing point. This morning sunny spells develop in the south but the north remains cloudier. Through the afternoon cloud amounts tend to increase in central and eastern areas but the north and west may brighten up.
Maximum temperatures range from 3C (36F) and 7C (45F) across the UK. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Tonight cloud amounts vary. Clear spells are most likely in southern counties, so that is where the greatest risk of frost and fog will be.

Buzz
Tomorrow very little changes. The day starts with a patchy frost and in much of the country it stays dry. However, cloud thickens in the north west and later on outbreaks of rain push into western Scotland and Northern Ireland. It will be quite cold again.
GFS, rain, 18:00 GMT Sat 5th January
Overnight and through Sunday patchy rain spread southeastwards into Wales and northern England. Late on the remnants of the wet weather could reach central and southern counties. It is likely to be milder than it has been recently.
On Monday the high pressure which has been sitting over the UK moves out into the Atlantic. That allows an area of low pressure to move down from the Iceland areas into continental Europe. Weather fronts associated with it push down across the UK bringing to a period of wet and windy weather. In the north it turns colder.
Through Tuesday colder and brighter conditions spread southwards. In the north showers turn wintry with snow over high ground.
During Wednesday and Thursday wintry showers are possibly in eastern coastal counties. Elsewhere there should be a good deal of dry weather as high pressure builds back from the west.
The rest of the week sees temperatures recovering. Wet weather is likely in the north and at times it could spread southwards.
