Dry, settled and quite cold

[Updated 08:10 02/01/2019]

Frosty weather

High pressure brings settled and chilly weather to most of the UK during the next few days. Cloudier skies are likely at times in the north west and this weekend they spread more widely across the northern half of the country. The settled spell is expected to continue next week....READ IN FULL

Wednesday starts with light showers in eastern counties. Central and western areas are dry and there has been quite a widespread frost. Through the rest of the day it remains in most areas but neat the east coast scattered showers continue.

It will be quite cold. Temperatures range from 3C (36F) in Scotland to 7C (45F) in the south west. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Buzz

Tomorrow the north west has cloudier skies which could bring a few spots of rain. Elsewhere it stays dry, bright and rather cold. In places fog may be reluctant to clear and where it is, temperatures will struggle to rise much above freezing point.

GFS forecast chart 1

GFS, temperatures, 15:00 GMT Thu 3rd January

On Friday little changes. Most of the country stays dry and rather cold, although in the far north west it may be cloudier and somewhat milder.

Weekend and beyond

During the weekend week high pressure keeps the weather mainly settled, however it will be slipping slightly farther southwards. That allows more cloud to spill in from the Atlantic across the north and as a result the risk of frost reduces. Southern counties remain brighter and clear spells lead to further frost and fog.

Next week things continue in a similar vein. High pressure sits close to the UK and it may edge northwards again.
