Settled and chilly start to 2019

[Updated 09:40 01/01/2019]

Frosty weather

The New Year starts with high pressure centred over Ireland and a plunge of cold arctic air pushing southwards into continental Europe. During the next few days it remains settled but it will be a lot colder than recently with nighttime frost becoming widespread. In the longer term changes only happen slowly....READ IN FULL

New Year's Day starts with cloud and patchy rain in central areas. Through the day the cloudy conditions push southwards and brighter conditions follow on behind. In eastern Scotland there will be scattered showers but elsewhere it should be dry.

Temperatures in the south peak at a mild 11C (52F) but in the north it will be a lot colder than it has been recently. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Buzz

Tomorrow an odd shower is possible near the east coast. However the vast majority of the country has a bright day. It will be cold with quite a widespread frost early and late.

GFS forecast chart 1

GFS, precipitation type, 15:00 GMT Wed 2nd January

On Thursday the rather cold and dry conditions continue in most of the country. The exception could be the far north west where milder conditions and patchy outbreaks of rain are possible.

High pressure holds on

During the rest of the week high pressure keeps the weather settled in most of the UK. Despite a relatively warm upper level air mass over the UK it remains rather cold. That is due to calm conditions and the lack of solar heating at this time of the year. Therefore risk of frost continues and in areas where fog is slow to lift daytime temperatures could remain very low.

The outlook for next week is very uncertain. However it increasingly looks as though high pressure will bring more dry and chilly weather to most of the UK.
