Dry and frosty in early January

[Updated 07:10 31/12/2018]

Frosty weather

Patchy rain pushes southwards into northern areas tonight but much of the country has a dry New Year's Eve. High pressure keeps the weather mostly settled in early January. However it will be colder than it has been recently with nighttime frosts becoming widespread. In the longer term changes will be slow....READ IN FULL

New Year's Eve starts with patchy light rain in the north west but elsewhere it is mild and dry. Through the day more persistent outbreaks of rain spread into western Scotland and winds strengthen in the north. Other parts of the UK remain dry and although a lot of cloud lingers, some brighter brighter spells are likely.

Temperatures range from between 10C (50F) to 12C (54F) in much of the UK. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Buzz

Tomorrow the band of cloud pushes into southern counties and it may produce a few spots of rain. The north has a brighter and colder day but temperatures in the south remain above the average.

GFS forecast chart 1

GFS, temperatures, 15:00 GMT Tue 1st January

On Wednesday a few showers are possible near the east coast. However the vast majority of the country has a bright and cold day. There is a risk of frost and fog early and late.

High pressure holds into 2019

During the second half of the week high pressure brings settled weather to most of the UK. In the north west a south westerly flow may develop and lead to milder conditions. Over the rest of the UK the upper level air mass warms but calm conditions mean it probably remains cold at the surface level. Therefore risk of frost continues and in areas where fog is slow to lift daytime temperatures could remain very low.

The outlook for next week is very uncertain. More changeable weather is likely to gradually develop and temperatures may recover. However, there is a possibility of high pressure building in the mid Atlantic and a very cold plunge of Arctic air moving southwards towards the UK.
