High pressure going nowhere fast

[Updated 08:45 29/12/2018]

Murky weather

The weather is stuck in a rut at the moment and there is little sign of significant change as we head into the new year. High pressure brings dry and quiet conditions to the south but there is a greater risk of rain in the north. It remains mild for the time of year....READ IN FULL

Saturday starts dry in the south but there is some light rain in central and northern areas. Through the rest of the day the rain fades away to leave mainly dry conditions. A few bright spells could develop but for many it stays overcast. Strong winds in the north steadily ease.

Temperatures range from 8C (46F) in northern Scotland to 13C (55F) in the south west. See the rain radar for the latest view.

High pressure holds into 2019

On New Year's Eve wet weather continues to be a risk in the north west. The rest of the country is expected to be dry and it stays mild or very mild.

During the rest of the week high pressure continues to be centred over the south of the UK. It brings a lot of dry weather to southern and central counties but a southwesterly flow in the north may lead to damp conditions at times. Temperatures in the south east probably dip back down towards the early January average but the north and west stay mild.
