Wintry weather

Central and eastern areas remain dry today but in the west there will be patchy outbreaks of rain. Friday starts with a few light showers around the coasts but it is dry and frosty in most of the country. Through the rest of the day central and eastern England remain mainly dry and bright, although near the coast an odd wintry shower is possible. In Northern Ireland outbreaks of rain push in from the west this afternoon and winds strengthen. Western Britain and Scotland have a bright start but later in the day cloud builds.

It will be cold. Temperatures in much of the UK range from 3C (39F) to 5C (41F) this afternoon but in the south west it will be a little milder. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Severe weather this weekend

Tomorrow wet and windy weather spreads northeastwards across the UK. In central and northern counties the rain is expected to be preceded by a period of snow and travel disruption is probable. Accumulations of several cms of snow are likely at low levels and over high ground in the north 20cm is possible. The problems will be compounded by gales force winds could lead to blizzard conditions. In southern counties milder air brings heavy outbreaks of rain and in the south west winds could strengthen to severe gales force.

By the evening drier conditions return to the south. Overnight the snow continues in Scotland but the drier and less cold conditions in the south gradually spread northwards. By the end of the night snow is expected to be restricted to high ground in Scotland.

On Sunday morning the remnants of the rain, sleet and snow clear northeastern Scotland to leave brighter conditions. Across southern and western regions heavy showers develop and at times they may merge to produce longer spells of rain. Elsewhere it should be mostly dry and less cold than recently.

Next week rather unsettled weather is expected. Temperatures fluctuate around the December average early on but there are signs of it turning colder again in the north later on.
