[Updated 08:50 12/12/2018]

Overcast weather

Central and eastern areas have a lot of dry weather in the next few days but in the west there will be patchy outbreaks of rain. Wednesday starts damp in western parts of the UK but central and eastern areas are dry. Through the day patchy outbreaks of rain continue in the west and it will be windy. Elsewhere it remains dry and some bright spells develop.

Temperatures in much of the UK will be around 6C (43F) to 8C (46F) this afternoon but in Northern Ireland and the south west it will be milder. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Snow risk on Saturday

Friday should be mostly dry and cold with a frost early in the day. In Northern Ireland outbreaks of rain develop in the afternoon and cloudier skies push into western Britain. Overnight the rain moves into western Britain and in places it turns to sleet or snow on its leading edge.

Through Saturday wet and windy weather spreads northeastwards across the UK. In central and northern counties rain is likely to be preceded by a period of snow. Significant accumulations of snow are possible, particularly over northern hills. Overnight the rain and snow clear from the west. Sunday should be dry and bright in the east but showers pop up in the west.

Next week rather unsettled weather is expected. Temperatures fluctuate around the December average.
