UK stuck in the middle this week

[Updated 08:30 09/12/2018]

Overcast weather

Forecast details for the coming week are uncertain. High pressure will build over Scandinavia and leave the UK close to the battleground between a cold continental air mass and a milder Atlantic one. Most computer models suggest the cold block will generally remain to our east, but there is the possibility of transient sleet or snow during the second half of the week....READ IN FULL

Sunday starts with showery rain in southern and central regions but it is brighter in the north. Through the morning the showers in the southern half of the country clear away and most places have sunny periods this afternoon. There will be further showers in the north and west, and over high ground in Scotland they turn to snow. Strong winds in the south steadily ease.

Temperatures range from 5C (41F) in Scotland to 11C (51F) in the south. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Buzz

Tomorrow much of the UK will be dry and chilly, although in the south west it remains milder. After a sunny start cloud builds eastwards and patchy outbreaks of rain push into the north west later on.

East vs west battle next week

Through the rest of the week high pressure over Scandinavia will be battling with the Atlantic flow. That allows colder air to move westwards across Europe but computer models suggest it will struggle to reach the UK. The most probable outcome is that it will remain just to our east for most of the week but there is uncertainty.

Tuesday should be dry in northern and eastern areas with close to average temperatures. In the west milder and wetter conditions are likely. Overnight and through Wednesday patchy spells of rain clear eastwards.

Through the second half of the week the weather could turn increasingly unsettled and there is the potential for some big rainfall totals to be recorded. Temperatures fluctuate around the mid December average in the south. Northern areas could be colder and there is a risk of snow over high ground.
