Winter 2018/19 forecast issued today

[Updated 07:10 01/12/2018]

Melting snow

The meteorological winter starts on an unsettled note today and that sets the theme for much of the coming week. The long range weather outlook is shrouded in uncertainty, but the TWO winter forecast will try to cast some light on how things may develop during December, January and February. It is issued later today....READ IN FULL

Saturday starts dry in Scotland and eastern England but elsewhere there are outbreaks of rain. Through the day wet and windy weather pushes eastwards but drier conditions follow on from the west. The rain should clear from eastern counties by the late afternoon. In Scotland it's a mixed picture with dry conditions in the north but rain in the south, and over high ground snow is possible.

Temperatures range from a cold 4C (39F) in the far north to a very mild 14C (57F) in the south. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Winter 2018/19 weather  - update 3

Tonight cloud builds from the west and another band of heavy rain moves eastwards across much of the country. Northern Scotland stays dry.

Tomorrow morning the wet weather clears to leave brighter conditions in England and Wales but there will be showers in the west. Rain continues to affect Scotland and Northern Ireland into the afternoon and over the Scottish mountains snow is likely. The southern half of the UK has a very mild day.

Wintry in the north next week?

Monday brings sunny spells but showers feed in from the west and in southern counties they may be heavy. The south stays mild but in the north it will be quite cold.

On Tuesday another band of wet and windy weather spreads northeastwards. The rain is expected to be heavy in the south and as it bumps into the colder air over northern Britain some of it could turn to snow. Over higher parts of the Pennines and the Scottish Highlands disruptive accumulations are possible.

Unsettled weather continues during the rest of the week. Later on there is a chance of colder air pushing southwards.
