Stormy weather

Heavy rain and gale force winds sweep across much of the UK today. Unsettled weather continues during the coming days in much of the country but Scotland could be colder and showery at times. Next week brings further heavy rain to southern and central areas but there could be an increasing risk of snow in the north....READ IN FULL

Thursday begins wet and windy in most of the UK. Through the day outbreaks of rain spread northeastwards and by late afternoon they become confined to north eastern Scotland. Brighter conditions follow on but heavy showers develop in the west. Gales or severe gales affect much of England and Wales this morning but through the second half of the day the strongest winds become restricted to the north east.

Temperatures range from 8C (48F) in the north west to a very mild 14C (57F) in the south east. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Winter 2018/19 weather  - update 3

Tonight heavy showers continue in the west and close to the south coast. In the north west they may become prolonged, leading to longer spells of rain. It will be windy, particularly in Scotland where gales are likely.

Tomorrow showers continue. Most of them are expected in the north and west, and over the Scottish mountains they turn to snow. The south and east of England have a drier and brighter day. It remains rather mild in the south but it will be colder in the north.

Wintry in the north next week?

On Saturday heavy outbreaks of rain push eastwards across England and Wales with brighter and showery conditions following from the west. Scotland probably stays in the showery air stream and it will be cold enough for snow over high ground. Overnight and into Sunday morning another area of wet weather is expected to push across the southern half of the UK.

Next week the unsettled theme continues. A conveyor belt of low pressure areas is expected to bring periods of heavy rain to the southern half of the UK. In Scotland colder and showery conditions are likely for much of the time and there is a risk of significant snow, especially over high ground.
