Cold, showery and windy

[Updated 07:00 20/11/2018]

Autumn gloom

An easterly wind brings showery conditions today and it will be cold enough for snow over high ground. It remains chilly during the next few days but it should become drier in the south for a time. The longer term picture is quite uncertain but predominantly changeable and rather cold conditions are favoured....READ IN FULL

Tuesday starts with showers in the northern half of the UK and the south eastern corner. Through the day showers push westwards across all regions. Some of them will be heavy and at times they turn to snow over the hills, and even at lower levels a wintry mix is possible. Some spells of sunshine are likely too, with the best of them in the north west where the showers will be more isolated.

Maximum temperatures range from 4C (39F) to 7C (45F) but when the strong easterly wind is added in it will feel a lot colder. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Winter 2018/19 weather  - update 3

Tonight wintry showers continue and over higher hills accumulating snow is possible. By the end of the night the heaviest showers push northwards into northern England, southern Scotland and possibly Northern Ireland. In southern and central counties clear spells form and quite a widespread frost is expected.

Tomorrow heavy wintry showers continue in the north. In the south and east it should be drier and brighter with showers becoming restricted to coastal counties. It will still be cold.

GFS forecast chart 1

GFS, forecast MSLP precipitation type, 15:00 GMT Wed 21st November

Cold but uncertain outlook

Through Thursday and Friday it stays showery in the north. The south probably has a good deal of dry weather initially but there is a risk of rain pushing into the south west. In southern counties temperatures edge up a little.

The weekend is looking mixed. Areas of low pressure remain centred to the south of the UK with high pressure to the north. That leaves the northern half of the country under a cold and showery easterly flow. In the south there is a chance of more prolonged spells of rain and it will still be quite chilly.

Next week's weather details are uncertain. On balance cold conditions look set to continue in the north and there is a risk of snow. The south may be quite changeable with showers or longer spells of rain at times.
