Fine today but showery outlook

[Updated 08:30 18/11/2018]

Grass frost

Virtually the whole of the UK has a fine Sunday with temperatures still close to the seasonal average this afternoon. During the next few days it turns cold and showers become increasingly widespread. Winter 2018/19 weather  - update 3

Tonight it stays dry. There will be clear spells but cloud is likely to build at times and limit the risk of frost.

Tomorrow much of the UK has quite a cold day with variable amounts of cloud and sunny spells. In the south and east thicker cloud brings showers at times.

Cold but uncertain outlook

During Tuesday and Wednesday an area of low pressure deepens to the south of the UK. That leads to increasingly showery conditions spreading northwards. The showers could merge to give longer spells of rain and and they may become wintry at times. Over high ground there is the likelihood of snow with accumulations possible above 200m.

Through Thursday and Friday the low pressure area pushes northwards keeping the weather changeable. The cold air is expected to be be steadily mixed out, so showers turn back to rain away from high ground in the north and temperatures edge upwards.

In the longer term there is a lot of uncertainty. Computer models show a range of outcomes for the weekend and beyond. On balance cold conditions look likely to continue in the north but in the south it could turn milder.
