High pressure returning this week

[Updated 07:10 12/11/2018]

Clear sky

Showery conditions continue today and tomorrow. Through mid-week high pressure builds over the continent and it turns drier as the Atlantic flow is blocked. It becomes unusually mild for mid-November as warm air is pumped up from the south west. By the weekend temperatures begin to edge downwards....READ IN FULL

Tonight there will be further showers and a more organised band of them may push eastwards across southern counties, Clearer skies follow from the west later in the night.

Tomorrow the showers become lighter and increasingly confined to western counties. However, by the evening more persistent outbreaks of rain push into Northern Ireland and western Scotland. Central and eastern England remain dry and bright.

Becoming unseasonably mild

During the middle part of the week a major change takes place as the UK becomes sandwiched between an increasingly strong continental high pressure area and low pressure systems in the Atlantic. That leads to the a very warm south or southwesterly flow.

On Wednesday the northern half of the UK has wet and windy weather but the rain should gradually clear eastwards in the  afternoon. Southern counties stay dry and become very mild with temperatures possibly reaching 16C (61F) in places.

Through Thursday and Friday the risk of rain becomes confined to the north west of the UK. Elsewhere it is expected to be mostly dry and very mild. Computer models suggest that temperatures could reach 18C (64F).

By the weekend high pressure begins to build northwards. That could allow cooler air to slowly begin filtering in from the southeast.
