The weather prospects for the coming week are mixed. In the short term it will be mild, but by Wednesday cooler air returns from the west. Thereafter, quite an unsettled period is expected with all of the country seeing rain at times, but also drier and brighter periods....READ IN FULL

Sunday starts mild and there is some patchy rain in the southern half of the UK. Through the rest of the day heavier outbreaks of rain push into the south west. The rest of England and Wales remains mostly cloudy and light rain is likely at times. Scotland and Northern Ireland have a dry and bright day.

It will be mild. Temperatures range from 10C (50F) in Scotland to 15C (59F) in southern England this afternoon. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view.

Tonight outbreaks of rain push northwards across the western half of the UK. By the end of the night wet weather is likely to be affecting Northern Ireland and much of Scotland. Elsewhere it should be dry but overcast.

Tomorrow the rain in Scotland gradually clears to leave dry conditions. Some spells of sunshine develop and it will be mild. Temperatures in the south could reach 16C (61F) in the afternoon.

Changeable outlook

During Tuesday and Wednesday a band of rain steadily pushes eastwards. Cooler and showery conditions follow on from the west.

Through the rest of the week the battle between high pressure over the continent and low pressure systems in the Atlantic continues. There is uncertainty about the positioning of the border zone but computer models now suggest it could be farther east than looked likely a couple of days ago. If that is the case all regions of the UK can expect outbreaks of rain at times with the wettest conditions in the west.
