Saturday starts wet and windy in the north west of the UK but elsewhere it is mostly dry. Through the day outbreaks of rain slowly push southeastwards. Ahead of them sunny spells develop and in the north west showery conditions return. It will be windy, particularly in northern and western areas.

The weather is likely to cause some problems for fireworks displays this evening. By 7pm the rain is expected to be affecting south western England, Wales and southern Scotland. It should be dry in the south east and East Anglia, as well as Northern Ireland and Northern Scotland. Winds gusting between 25mph in the south east and 50mph further north and west will be an issue.

Temperatures range between 12C (54F) and 15C (59F) in most of the country this afternoon. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view.

Next week's weather

On Monday outbreaks of rain spread northeastwards. The south east and East Anglia again probably miss them and stay dry. In the south it could become very mild as a southerly flow begins to pull warm air up from southern Europe.

During Tuesday and Wednesday a band of rain slowly push eastwards and is followed by cooler and showery conditions.

Through the rest of the week the battle between high pressure over the continent and areas of low pressure in the Atlantic continues. There is uncertainty about the positioning of the border zone but it could well be near to the west of the UK. If that happens the east can expect a lot of dry and mild weather. In the west it may be very wet.
