Arctic plunge tomorrow

[Updated 07:15 25/10/2018]

Regent's Park, snow scene, October 2008

A band of rain pushes southwards during the next 24 hours and it is followed by much colder Arctic air. The weekend will be showery but there should be a good deal of dry and sunny periods. In the north showers could turn to snow at times and even further south a wintry mix is possible....READ IN FULL

Thursday starts mostly dry and locally in the south there has been a touch of frost. Through the day it remains fine in the southern half of the UK with variable amounts of cloud. In parts of the north thicker cloud brings some drizzle and by the end of the morning outbreaks of rain spread into western Scotland. This afternoon the wet conditions spread into much of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Temperatures range from 10C (50F) in north western Scotland to 16C (61F) in England. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view.

Winter 2018/19 weather  - update 3

Tonight outbreaks of rain spread southeastwards to reach southern counties by the morning. Colder and showery conditions follow on from the north.

Tomorrow the remnants of the rain clear from the south early on to leave a bright and cold day. Showers develop with most of them in the north and in coastal counties. In the north they turn increasingly wintry and over the Scottish mountains accumulating snow is likely.

Cold weekend

Saturday will be a cold day and often bright. There will be showers around and at times they could fall as snow at low levels in the north. Southern counties have a good deal of dry weather during the day. During the evening winds back into more of a northeasterly direction and that leads to increasing risk of showers pushing into central and eastern England. If those become heavy enough a few flakes of snow may be mixed in.

The chill continues on Sunday. However, a ridge of high pressure will be toppling in from the north west so showers become increasingly confined to eastern and southern areas.

Changeable and chilly next week

On Monday it remains cold and and easterly flow is likely to develop as high pressure builds over Scandinavia. Showers could affect eastern counties and there is a chance of rain in the west as weather fronts edge in from the Atlantic. Over the Welsh mountains snow is possible.

GFS forecast chart 2

GFS, forecast pressure and 500Pa heights, 16:00 BST Mon 29th October

During Tuesday and Wednesday quite a messy picture develops. Areas of low pressure bring a risk of showers or longer spells of rain to much of the UK and it remains quite cold.

The second half of the week is looking changeable. The wettest periods are likely in the north and west, but all areas could see some rain. High pressure is more likely to influence the weather in the south and east..

Server migration this weekend

The TWO website and back-end app services will be migrating to a new server environment during the next week with the cut over likely to take place this Saturday. The transition means big changes behind the scenes and they could could lead to some service disruption and snagging problems. Once the move is complete we'll have a much flexible platform that makes it easier to expand and provide new services in the future.
