Tuesday begins windy and there is some light rain in England and Wales. Through the rest of the day patchy outbreaks of rain affect the north and west. Elsewhere it stays mainly dry and spells of sunshine develop at times. It remains windy with gales force gusts in exposed northern locations.

Temperatures range from 9C (48F) in northern Scotland to a warm 20C (68F) in the south. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view.

Winter 2018/19 weather  - update 2

Tonight winds ease and it becomes mostly dry. Clear spells early on allow temperatures to dip rapidly in the north but after midnight cloud builds from the west and it becomes less cold. In the north west outbreaks of rain return.

Tomorrow wet and windy weather spreads over Scotland and Northern Ireland but the rain is expected to be patchy to the east of high ground. Elsewhere it stays dry and in bright spells it feels quite warm.

Mid term outlook

On Thursday the north to south split continues. The north has outbreaks of rain which could turn heavy at times. Southern and central Britain have another dry and warm day. In the south temperatures could reach 22C (72F).

The rest of the week brings mixed weather. By Saturday an area of low pressure is expected to push up from south and it may deepen quite rapidly over the UK. That brings the potential for heavy rain and strong winds in much of England and Wales. Colder air from the north may be pulled down across the UK for a time, and that could lead to the possibility of wet snow falling over high ground in northern England.

Next week predominantly settled weather returns to southern and eastern areas. The north and west probably remain under a more changeable Atlantic flow.
