Winter 2018/19 weather - update 2
Tonight another batch of wet weather spreads across western, and northern areas. Winds strengthen again and in Northern Ireland and western Scotland they could reach 60mph. By the end of the night patchy outbreaks of rain may reach southern counties.
Tomorrow morning heavy rain moves into the north west of the UK. It remains very windy and gusts of over 70mph could lead to disruption. Elsewhere there should be a lot of dry weather but through the day outbreaks of rain spread southeastwards and become increasingly fragmented.
GFS, forecast wind gusts, 10:00 BST Wed 19th September
During Thursday and Friday bands of rain are expected to move southeastwards and they will be heavy at times. Cooler and showery conditions follow into the north and it could be cold enough for sleet or snow over the Scottish mountains.
The weekend forecast details are uncertain. At this stage it looks as though many places start off dry but an area of low pressure may push in from the southwest and deepen over the UK. That brings the prospect of further wet and windy spells.
GFS, forecast pressure and 500hPa heights, 19:00 BST Sat 22nd September
More settled weather is favoured during the first half of next week. The driest and warmest conditions will probably be in the south as high pressure begins to have more influence. Northern areas remain more changeable and towards the end of the week the risk of rain may return southwards.
