The autumn equinox is on September 23rd and many people associate the period around it with stormy weather. This year it looks set to live up to that billing as periods of wet and windy weather affect much of the UK. Northern and western areas bear the brunt initially but later on it could become unsettled in the south too....READ IN FULL
Monday is off to a mostly dry and mild start. Through the day cloud and rain spread across Northern Ireland and Scotland. Central areas remain generally overcast with a risk of drizzle but in the south spells of warm sunshine develop. Winds will be strengthening as the remnants of ex-Hurricane Helene approach and this afternoon gales are possible in the west.
Temperatures range from 12C (54F) in the north west to a very warm 26C (78F) in eastern England. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view.

Winter 2018/19 weather - update 2
Tonight wet and very windy weather spreads northeastwards across western, central and northern areas. The strongest winds are expected to be in the west where gusts could exceed 60mph. By the end of the night it turns drier in central areas.
Tomorrow rain steadily pulls away northeastwards and clears most of Scotland during the early afternoon. Drier and brighter conditions follow but it stays windy with gusts of over 50mph for much of the day in the north. Central and eastern England will be warm again.
On Wednesday another area of low pressure is expected to run northeastwards and track close to Ireland and western Scotland. That brings wet and windy weather to the north and west. Computer models show the potential for severe gales with gusts of over 70mph in the northern half of the UK.

Later in the day frontal system associated with the low pressure pushes southeastwards and brings rain to western and central Britain. Much of the south and south east probably remain dry but windy.
More stormy weather is expected during the second half of the week. Forecast details are uncertain but there is the potential for damaging gales, particularly in central and northern regions. The wet and windy conditions could also extend into southern counties at times. In the north it may turn colder and over the Scottish mountains there is a risk of sleet or snow.
