Patchy rain spreads southeastwards

[Updated 07:10 14/09/2018]

Autumn colours

The north to south split continues in the next few days. The south has a lot of dry weather but central and northern regions remain more changeable. During the first half of next week it probably becomes warm in the south and east, but the remnants of Hurricane Helene may bring very wet and windy conditions to the north west....READ IN FULL

Friday starts wet in the north west of the UK but elsewhere it is mostly dry. During the rest of the day outbreaks of rain slowly push down into central areas and brighter conditions return to the north west. The rain becomes increasingly patchy and southern counties should remain mostly dry. It will be quite windy generally.

Temperatures range from 11C (52F) in the north west to 19C (66F) in the south. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view.

Tonight drier conditions return. It will become chilly in the north with ground frost forming in sheltered places.

Tomorrow starts dry but wet and windy weather pushes into the north west during the second half of the day. Elsewhere it will be dry and in sunny spells temperatures could be a degree or two up on today's values, especially in the south.

On Sunday outbreaks of rain spread southeastwards into central areas. Drier conditions return to the north but a good deal of cloud remains. Much of the south as well as East Anglia could stay dry and in any sunny spells that develop it should feel warm.

Hurricane Helene next week

During the early part of next week Hurricane Helene heads across the Atlantic towards the UK, but by the time it approaches us it will no longer be a hurricane. Nonetheless the storm could have a significant impact on the UK's weather but there uncertainty about how it will interact with the jet stream. Some computer model runs show it pushing up from the southwest and tracking close to the west of Ireland. That could lead to very wet and windy weather in the north west. Further south and east high temperatures are possible due to a combination of tropical air embedded in Helene and very warm air from southern Europe being pulled northwards.
