Warm where the sun appears

[Updated 08:20 09/09/2018]

Overcast weather

The week ahead will be quite mixed. In the south a lot of dry weather is expected but the north remains more changeable with showers and longer spells of rain. After a warm start in the south cooler air returns during the middle of the week but it could warm up again next weekend....READ IN FULL

Sunday is off to a damp start in much of the north and there is patchy rain in the south too. Through the rest of the day it turns brighter in much of the north but heavy showers push into the west. In the southern half of the UK thicker cloud brings drizzle or light rain at times, but some sunny spells are likely.

Temperatures range from 12C (54F) in the north west to 22C (72F) in the south where the cloud breaks. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view.

Tonight rain affects the far north west. Elsewhere it remains mostly dry but there will be a lot of cloud.

Tomorrow much of the country will be dry with variable amounts of cloud, and southern counties have some warm spells of sunshine. In the north west outbreaks of rain continue and during the second half of the day wet weather pushes across Northern Ireland and into western Britain.

Cooler air pushing southeastwards

Tuesday should be warm and dry in the south. Temperatures may push up towards 26C (78F) if sunny periods continue into the afternoon. An area of cloud and rain will be pushing southeastwards, but there is some uncertainty about timing. Cooler and showery conditions follow into northern areas.

By Wednesday the band of rain may become slow moving over southern counties. Central and northern regions have a bright day with scattered showers and sunny spells.

GFS, forecast pressure and rain, 19:00 BST Wed 12th September

Through the rest of the week high pressure keeps it mostly dry in southern and central regions but the north has further wet and windy periods. Temperatures are expected to be close to average in the north but it probably becomes quite warm in the south later on.
