More unsettled later this week

[Updated 07:20 04/09/2018]

Cloudy skies

The quiet weather continues today and tomorrow but by Thursday it starts to turn more unsettled as an area of low pressure moves down from the northwest. Periods of wet and windy weather affect much of the UK on Friday and Saturday but high pressure will be building back by Sunday....READ IN FULL

Tuesday starts overcast with patchy spells of drizzle and light light rain in the southern half of the UK. This morning sunny spells develop in the north and west as well as the south east and East Anglia. In other parts of England there will be a lot of cloud but during the afternoon the chance of bright spells increases.

In the south and south east temperatures reach a warm 23C (73F) in the sunshine but in the north west maximum values will be closer to 16C (61F). See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view.

Winter 2018/19 weather

Tonight there could be a few showers in the south eastern corner and in the north west thicker cloud brings some rain by the end of the night. Elsewhere it remains dry.

Tomorrow morning showers continue in the south east but much of the country will be dry. Through the day the wet weather in the north west steadily pushes southeastwards across Scotland and Northern Ireland, with thicker cloud reaching parts of northern England and Wales later on. In the south it will be quite warm again in sunny spells.

Unsettled spell developing

On Thursday blustery and heavy showers spread southeastwards across much of the country. Despite that some drier and brighter spells are likely with the best of them in the south.

Through Friday the showers probably merge together in the north o give more prolonged and heavy outbreaks of rain. In the south showers are expected to be more scattered and there should be quite a lot of dry weather. It will be blustery with gales possible in exposed parts of the north and west.

The changeable theme continues into the weekend but high pressure will be building back in from the southwest. By Sunday it should be mainly dry in much of the south and west, but the risk of showers remains in the north and possibly east.

North to south split next week?

Computer models currently show northern areas having changeable weather for much of next week. In the south there is more emphasis on drier and warmer periods, and at times the more settled conditions could extend northwards as high pressure builds.
