Warm start to the autumn

[Updated 07:00 01/09/2018]

Fair weather

September 1st marks the start of the meteorological autumn but in much of the country the summery conditions continue. In the coming days high pressure remains the boss so there will be more fine weather, but in the north west of the UK it remains more changeable....READ IN FULL

Saturday starts with patchy rain in the north and west but elsewhere it is fine. The rest of the day brings spells of warm sunshine to central and eastern Britain. However, much of the north and west remains overcast with an ongoing risk of drizzle or light outbreaks of rain.

Temperatures this afternoon range from 15C (59F) in the north west to 24C (75F) in the brighter areas. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view.

Autumn 2018 forecast

Winter 2018/19 weather

Tonight light spells of rain continue in the north and west of the UK. In the south and east it will be dry and under clear skies it could become misty by the morning

Tomorrow it's a similar picture. If anything temperatures edge up a little on today's values in the south and the warmth filters northwards. In eastern Scotland a warm 23C (73F) is possible. The west has more cloud and in the afternoon more persistent spells of rain push into Northern Ireland.

Mostly fine next week

On Monday a band of cloud and rain in the north pushes down into central regions and gradually fragments. During the second half of the day it could trigger a few hefty showers in southern counties, but there should continue to be a lot of dry and warm weather. Clearer and cooler conditions follow into northern regions.

On Tuesday high pressure builds in from the west so it stays mostly dry. Cooler air flowing around the high pressure area means temperatures will be lower than in recent days, especially in southern counties.

During the rest of the week high pressure continues to dominate proceedings but its centre probably migrates to the north of the UK. That could lead to a greater risk of showers in the south and east and the possibility of cooler air pushing in from the northeast.
